35843“Blessed is the influence of one true, loving human soul on another.” - George Eliot True story: I was brought to tears a few times a couple weeks ago at our son and new daughter-in-law’s wedding. Of course, because I was overcome with joyful emotions for them and our family. But I’m referring to something different. I had two separate conversations with two of our son’s middle & high school friends at the rehearsal dinner. They each told me something that had a profound impact on them as a result of being at our house when they were kids. One young man asked, “Do you remember when you guys let me sleep on your couch when my parents kicked me out?” His wife chimed in asking, “you were those parents?! Oh my gosh, thank you for taking care of my husband!! He told me all about you guys!” Later that evening the other young man hugged me and said, “You guys were the strict parents, but you know what? We always knew you loved us and would do anything for us. You gave me the stability I didn’t have at home.” “That can’t be true!!” I said. “I was so imperfect!!” My mind immediately transported back to that season of my life parenting 4 teenagers. In truth, they were some of my most trying years as a parent - as a human!! There were many beautiful moments, of course, but so many painful moments, too. Many times I felt so ill-equipped and at a loss for what to do. Before I sunk deeper into the rabbit hole of memories, I heard the young man say, “Yeah, you guys weren’t perfect. But you cared about me and I felt loved by you. I just wanted to thank you for that.” The truth is, we’re ALL influencers. We ALL are impacting the lives of people who cross our paths. We’re not perfect - not one of us. But when love is our aim, even in our most imperfect moments, that love finds its way into another person’s heart. Usually, it’s someone who really needs it.
